Children of parents suffering from burnout are more likely than others to experience school burnout, says the latest research.

These findings are the outcome of the first scientific study into the links between adolescents’ and parents’ burnout.

“Experiences of burnout were shared most particularly between adolescents and parents of the same gender, i.e. between daughters and mothers and between sons and fathers,” says Katariina Salmela-Aro, psychology professor at Jyvaskyla University, Finland.

“The parent of the same gender seems to serve as a role model for the development of burnout,” adds Salmela-Aro, who led the research. School burnout is a chronic school-related stress syndrome that is manifested in fatigue, experiences of cynicism about school and a sense of inadequacy as a student.

Estimates of such burnout were obtained from 515 ninth-graders aged 15 and from 595 parents of these adolescents. The results showed that experiences of burnout were shared in families. Parental burnout may also show up as a negative style of upbringing and as a lowered interest and involvement in adolescents’ lives.

The results indicated that family finances were also reflected in the level of shared burnout, says a Jyvaskyla varsity release.

“The greater the family’s financial worries, the higher the level of experienced burnout. This is an important result in view of the potential impact of the ongoing recession on the well-being of families and young people,” says Salmela-Aro.

“If you know that a woman is getting beaten up by her husband, don’t turn your face, because you need to intervene,” said a passionate Mallika Dutt at an exclusive fashion event hosted by Muse in Mumbai.

Dutt is the founder of Breakthrough, an international human rights organisation, that launched the multi-media campaign Bell Bajao to stop violence against women.

In order to create more awareness about the campaign, Breakthrough joined hands with three prominent male designers – Aki Narula, Lecoanet Hemant and Narendra Kumar – who custom designed items in support of the Bell Bajao campaign.

Mallika informed it was a conscious effort to involve male designers since they want more men to participate in fighting violence against women.

Aki Narula shares, “It is very upsetting to realise that domestic violence may not happen in your house but it may take place in your neighbourhood. This is the first time that I am designing for a cause and it gives me immense pleasure to do so.” Aki designed a roomy, white tote that can be carried for bar to the beach, and from class rooms to office. The tote has six pockets with designs of various bells. (See pic above)

Narendra Kumar who designed a unisex t-shirt believes that it is important to create awareness about violence against women among adolescents and teenagers because that’s when impressions form and when they grow up these teens can be agents of change. The t-shirt has the design of a crossword which depicts the intellect according to Nari. The designer has priced his tees at Rs 500 per piece because he wants to keep it reasonable so that more people can purchase it, thereby creating more awareness. (See pic above)

Hemant Sagar’s t-shirt represents the female expression ‘Stop’ with a design of a woman’s hand decorated in mehendi. The designer explained, “If you ever witness domestic violence, don’t turn away. Deal with such issues hands-on. The hand on the t-shirt can also be interpreted as the hand of Fatima and mehendi is symbolic of a married woman.”

These creations that were designed with so much thought are available at Muse throughout the month and will then be sold online on www.breakthrough.tv. Proceeds of the sales will be directed towards supporting the organisation’s human rights initiatives.

But what about the not-as-popular Facebook applications? With more than 27,000 apps to choose from, and the number growing daily, there are plenty of diamonds in the rough that may be unknown, but still stand out because they are particularly interesting, unique, viral or just darn fun.

Here are 10 Facebook applications that you probably have never heard of — but should.

1) Traveler IQ Challenge — This game tests players to find out the answer the question “How well do you know your world?” As a clock counts down, the game presents players with world cities, famous places and world capitals, at various skill levels. Players can only advance to the next level after reaching a high enough score. When players are done with the round, they get a ranking — an overall ranking, and a ranking among their friends — and they are given the opportunity to “challenge their friends” to compete. As well as being educational, this game is addictive. The interface is clean and easy-to-use, and the sense of urgency that the ticking clock provides is excellent.

2) iDescribe — This application is based on the premise that people like to know what their friends think of them. The application makes it easy for friends to pick 5 words that best describe each other. The genius of this app lies in its inherent viral nature — after signing up for iDescribe, there is no way to use it unless your friends are using it, too. In fact, when users sign up for the service and don’t immediately invite their friends, they are reminded: “You haven’t invited any of your friends to iDescribe! So you may not be described back by as many people as you would if you invite some friends!”

3) Web Presence — This application is really simple and useful. It allows users to feature their “social profile” by linking to their profile pages on various other social networking sites. This comes in handy for both business and personal use, as users can add a Web site or blog URL, or link to their profiles on LinkedIn, MySpace, Flickr, Twitter or any other site. There are some features that seem missing here — it would be helpful if the app prompted users on the services that they could enter, it would be nice to be able to reorder the list, and the RSS integration that’s coming in the future will be great — but this is still a simple, easy-to-use and helpful application that could quickly benefit every Facebook user.

4) Sketch Me — This is another fun and very easy to use app. As soon as the application is installed, it immediately takes the user’s profile picture and creates a pencil sketch of the image. Once the user’s friends see their pencil sketched picture, they’ll want one of their own.

5) TWENTY20 Cricket — First a huge disclaimer — I don’t play cricket or know how to play cricket. But even so, this is a really cool game. The best thing about TWENTY20 Cricket is that when a user signs up, they build a team made up of themselves and 14 friends. Without the friends, there’s no game. And the application encourages continued use; the more that users “train” on playing, the more points they earn (and the more likely they are to win in head-to-head challenges).

6) Launch A Package — This is the only corporate app that made the list, and it’s from FedEx. The tool lets you create a package to send to a friend, placing “gifts,” photos or other attachments in a well-branded FedEx box. The most fun comes at the end of the process when the sender gets to slingshot the package to their friend — who then has to download the application to open the package on their end.

7) Countdown — The concept here is simple — this application lets you set a date, and countdown to an event with a ticker that runs on a user’s profile. Since everyone is looking forward to something, this app has endless utility.

Who Has The Biggest Brain? — Part game, part IQ test, this application is hugely addictive. Besides having a great name, the application tests users in four different categories — analysis, calculation, memory and visual processing. At the end of the test, users are given a ranking. They are then compared to their friends who took the test, as well as the rest of the world and their hometown. This application continues to spread as people compete against their friends (and their own personal-best scores) to get a better ranking.

9) Where I’ve Been — This is another travel-related application, but instead of being a game, it allows users to plot on a world map the places they’ve visited, lived and want to go. After filling out their personal profile, users can share/compare maps with their friends. The more places a person’s been, the more addictive this application becomes — and the more that the creators of the app will reach their target audience. (Smart!)

10) Pixton Comics — This may be the best “Facebook application” that isn’t really a Facebook application. Although you can reach the service through Facebook, users actually have to access the app on the Pixton Comics’ site. Once through the registration hoopla, users can create comics without having to draw — either by choosing from templates that are available on the site, or by building their own comic from scratch. Once built, the comic can be embedded in any site — including Facebook.

A lot of people are still on the learning curve for WordPress, so I would like to clear some myths that exist in the blogosphere about WordPress.

1. WordPress is a Website Builder.

No Sherlock, WordPress is a blogging CMS and that is a fact. Although, there are themes and plugins which will make your WordPress blog look like a website.

2. I can use all the plugins in the world and they will rise my WordPress blog to fame.

I am sorry to say but you are mistaken if you think so. WordPress is a blogger’s nightmare when it comes to CPU usage. It can bring any kind of server (even enterprise ones) to its knees and most of the plugins are not optimized for their SQL queries. Plugins are notorious for causing high CPU usage on servers. So, be careful on what and how many plugins you activate on your blog.

3. WordPress is limited to WordPress.com

Many new users think what WordPress can only be used if they have an account on WordPress.com. It’s not so. Yes, WordPress.com offers free blogs to people who do not have hosting or a domain name but on the other hand, WordPress.org offers WordPress in the form of a software that can be downloaded and installed either locally (if you are running a server) or on your own hosting if you have any.

4. I can use blogger templates on WordPress and vice versa.

No. You cannot do that because coding for both kind of templates differs in many ways. Although, there are people who convert templates from one platform to another.

5. WordPress is only for hobby blogs.

Please search a little more, and you will find that a heap of professional bloggers are using WordPress as their blogging platform.

6. It’s easy for WordPress blogs to get hacked.

No. Just update your WordPress installation to the latest one and keep a track on the released security fixes. WordPress is as secure as any other normal website.

7. WordPress has little or no documentation.

Not true. If you look at http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page, you will find almost everything that you ever needed to know about WordPress. Also, if you search the Internet, you can find a heap of information readily available.

8. What… Only 10 widgets to use on my sidebars??

Please lookup Google.com and you will find lots of plugins that extend this functionality and allow you unlimited widgets on your sidebars. For example, this one :- http://thephppro.com/plugins/tppSidebarPageSections/

9. Where do I buy WordPress from?

Good question. I wish someone could charge you for asking that, but WordPress is a free software.

Today Google is the best search engine and other service providers around the world. Today my friend pass me an e-mail describing ten things that you might not know about Google.

The name Google is a spelling error. The founders of the site, Larry page and Sergey Brin, thought they were going for ‘Googol.’ Googol is the mathematical term for 1 followed by 100 zeros. The term was coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner, and was popularized in the book, Mathematics and the Imagination by Kasner and James Newman. Google’s play on the term reflects the company’s mission to organize the immense amount of information available on the web. Initially, Larry and Sergey Brin called their search engine BackRub, named for its analysis of the of the web’s “back links.” The search for a new name began in 1997, with Larry and his officemates starting a hunt for a number of possible new names for the rapidly improving search technology.

The reason the Google page is so bare is because the founder didn’t know HTML and just wanted a quick interface. Due to the sparseness of the homepage, in early user tests they noted people just kept sitting staring at the screen, waiting for the rest to appear. To solve the particular problem theGoogle Copyright message was inserted to act as an end of page marker.

Google started as a research project by Larry page and Sergey Brin when they were 24 and 23 years respectively. Google’s mission statement is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. The company’s first office was in a garage, in Menlo Park, California. Google’s first employee was Craig Silverstein, now Google’s director of technology.

The basis of Google’s search technology is called PageRank that assigns an “importance” value to each page on the web and gives it a rank to determine how useful it is. However, that is not why it is called PageRank. It is actually named afterGoogle co-founder Larry Page.

Google receives about 20 million search queries each day from every part of the world, including Antarctica and Vatican. You can have theGoogle homepage set up in as many as 116 different languages — including Urdu, Latin, Cambodia, Tonga, and Yoruba. In fact, Google has the largest network of translators in the world.

In the earliest stage of Google, there was no submit button, rather the Enter key needed to be pressed.Google has banned computer-generated search requests, which can sop up substantial system resources and help unscrupulous marketers manipulate its search rankings.

The Google’s free web mail service Gmail was used internally for nearly two years prior to launch to the public. The researchers found out six types of email users, and Gmail has been designed to accommodate these six.The free e-mail service recently changed its name for new UK users. Following a trademark dispute with a London-based Independent International Investment Research, the mail account has been renamed Google Mail.

It would take 5,707 years for a person to search Google’s 3 billion pages. The Google software does it in 0.5 seconds.Google Groups comprises more than 845 million Usenet messages, which is the world’s largest collection of messages or the equivalent of more than a terabyte of human conversation.

The logos that appear on the Google homepage during noteworthy days and dates and important events are called Google Doodle. The company has also created an online museum where it has all the logos it has put on various occasions so far.Dennis Hwang, a Korean computer artist in the United States, is the guy behind these witty Doodles. Hwang has been drawing the face ofGoogle for over two years.

You have heard of Google Earth , but not many know there is a site called Google Moon, which maps the Lunar surface.Google Moon is an extension of Google Maps and Google Earth that, courtesy of NASA imagery, enables you to surf the Moon’s surface and check out the exact spots that the Apollo astronauts made their landings

Keyhole, the satellite imaging company that Google acquired in October 2004 was funded by CIA.Keyhole’s technology runs Google’s popular program Google Earth that allows users to quickly view stored satellite images from all around the world.
