Being bombarded with spam can be a real nuisance and in a business setting you want to be extra careful about ensuring the safety of your emails. There are different types of anti-spam filtering software available depending on your particular needs. Spam filter software should be: 1) easy to customize (the program should allow you to tweak settings and create ones of your own) 2) offer a wide range of features 3) easy to install 4) reliable (the program should be stable and consistent).

Sherweb for instance, is one of the few hosting providers to include advanced protection free of charge with every hosted exchange mailbox. Sherweb protects its clients with its free anti-spam and antivirus technology that combines MailChannels Traffic Control with Cloudmark intelligent content filtering technology. Traffic Control reduces spam at the connection layer by up to 98%. Traffic Control also stops spam based on the reputation of email senders, rather than the content of messages. The Cloudmark spam detection engine is also quite innovative in that it relies on the collective intelligence of 180 million reporting sources from the Cloudmark Global Threat Network. This provides an extremely rapid response to new and mutating threats.

Here are some top reviewed anti-spam programs that will ensure the best protection against unwanted SPAM.

SPAMfighter

SPAMfighter ranked #1 out of 10 spam filter products which were reviewed and compared on Top Ten Reviews. A community-based spam filter allows users to blacklist or whitelist incoming emails. This means that if a particular email address or domain is blacklisted by a certain number of members of the SPAM fighting community, it will be banned forever. Some highlights of this software include protection against phishing, identity theft and other types of email fraud, protection of all the email accounts on your PC as well as recognition of spam sent as pictures.

CA Anti-Spam Software

CA Anti-Spam software, (former Qurb Anti-Spam software, which won PC Magazine Editor’s Choice for three years running), works immediately upon installation following a quick download. CA Anti-Spam automatically builds your whitelist of approved senders by scanning your saved/sent email and has tight integration with Outlook and Outlook Express. You can download the free 15 day trial and if you are happy with the software you can buy it for $29.99.

Email Remover

Email Remover connects to your ISP and retrieves mail header information (sender, subject, date, etc…) letting you pick mail you don’t want to receive and deleting it from the mail server. It will optionally run your regular email client when it’s done so that you can transfer and read the mail you do want. Best of all, it’s free.

Cloudmark Desktop

Though mentioned briefly at the beginning, Cloudmark is specifically for Outlook / Outlook Express users, and relies on the collective opinion of over one million+ users. Cloudmark will inconspicuously work away removing unwanted mail from your Inbox. One of the best features about this product is that it will never delete your genuine personal mail by incorrectly classifying it as spam. The Cloudmark networking approach catches phishing hoaxes as well as spam.
ChoiceMail

With ChoiceMail you can accept and reject emails by domain, IP address, or block email from known spam senders. ChoiceMail assumes everything is spam until you grant permission to let it through. You may find the setup process a little long and tedious at first. Once you’re done however, you will find that this is a worthwhile tool. ChoiceMail has some built-in rules but also allows you to create your own. Overall, the program does an excellent job controlling spam using a permission-based method. This product costs $29.95.

Now to structure your comment you’ll need to open your style.css file and place the following code:

WordPress has grown to be commonly defined as the core solution for your blogging needs. It is the most recognized and sought after Content Management System by writers and designers. Consequently, over the past few years there has been a voluble increase in WordPress blogs, this has caused the “need” for useful tips, tricks, and hacks, all made to allow the customizing of your WordPress powered site. Here are 13 code snippets or hacks that will help you extend the capabilities of your WordPress site.

Customize the Logo of Your WordPress Login Page

After constantly having to visit your WordPress login page, having to see the same logo and design over and over can be a bit boring. This is where this hack comes in handy. All you have to do is place the following in your functions.php file, and replace the image.

function my_custom_login_logo() {
    echo '<style type="text/css">
        h1 a { background-image:url('.get_bloginfo('template_directory').'/images/custom-login-logo.gif) !important; }
    </style>';
}

add_action('login_head', 'my_custom_login_logo');

Detecting Mobile Devices Accessing Your Site

Mobile web surfing is continuing to evolve on a larger scale. This is why detecting those users who are visiting your WordPress blog through a mobile device and redirecting them to a mobile version of your site is important. In order to achieve this, you first have to get the code from detectmobilebrowsers.mobi and upload it to your theme directory.

Then, all you simply have to do is open your header.php file and place the following at the top of the file. Remember to edit line 5 to where you’d like to redirect mobile users.

include('mobile_device_detect.php');
$mobile = mobile_device_detect();

if ($mobile==true) {
  header( 'Location: http://your-website.com/?theme=Your_Mobile_Theme' ) ;
}

Automatically Resize Images

If you’re accustomed to displaying large quantities of images on your blog, then you know how tedious it can be to have to always resize your images manually. Now you can use this hack to automatically resize any image you’d like to whatever width and height you choose for a more organized look. To do this, copy the following script and create a folder for it anywhere on your site (i.e. scripts) and name it “timthumb.php“. Now, you can use the following syntax to add an automatically resized image to your blog post:

<img src="/scripts/timthumb.php?src=/images/whatever.jpg&amp;h=150&amp;w=150&amp;zc=1" alt="" />

Displaying Your Tags in a Dropdown Menu

Tag clouds are often hard to read, especially for a more busy site. Eliminate this problem by using a dropdown menu to display your tags. You must place the following code in your functions.php file.

<?php
function dropdown_tag_cloud( $args = '' ) {
	$defaults = array(
		'smallest' => 8, 'largest' => 22, 'unit' => 'pt', 'number' => 45,
		'format' => 'flat', 'orderby' => 'name', 'order' => 'ASC',
		'exclude' => '', 'include' => ''
	);
	$args = wp_parse_args( $args, $defaults );

	$tags = get_tags( array_merge($args, array('orderby' => 'count', 'order' => 'DESC')) ); // Always query top tags

	if ( empty($tags) )
		return;

	$return = dropdown_generate_tag_cloud( $tags, $args ); // Here's where those top tags get sorted according to $args
	if ( is_wp_error( $return ) )
		return false;
	else
		echo apply_filters( 'dropdown_tag_cloud', $return, $args );
}

function dropdown_generate_tag_cloud( $tags, $args = '' ) {
	global $wp_rewrite;
	$defaults = array(
		'smallest' => 8, 'largest' => 22, 'unit' => 'pt', 'number' => 45,
		'format' => 'flat', 'orderby' => 'name', 'order' => 'ASC'
	);
	$args = wp_parse_args( $args, $defaults );
	extract($args);

	if ( !$tags )
		return;
	$counts = $tag_links = array();
	foreach ( (array) $tags as $tag ) {
		$counts[$tag->name] = $tag->count;
		$tag_links[$tag->name] = get_tag_link( $tag->term_id );
		if ( is_wp_error( $tag_links[$tag->name] ) )
			return $tag_links[$tag->name];
		$tag_ids[$tag->name] = $tag->term_id;
	}

	$min_count = min($counts);
	$spread = max($counts) - $min_count;
	if ( $spread <= 0 )
		$spread = 1;
	$font_spread = $largest - $smallest;
	if ( $font_spread <= 0 )
		$font_spread = 1;
	$font_step = $font_spread / $spread;

	// SQL cannot save you; this is a second (potentially different) sort on a subset of data.
	if ( 'name' == $orderby )
		uksort($counts, 'strnatcasecmp');
	else
		asort($counts);

	if ( 'DESC' == $order )
		$counts = array_reverse( $counts, true );

	$a = array();

	$rel = ( is_object($wp_rewrite) && $wp_rewrite->using_permalinks() ) ? ' rel="tag"' : '';

	foreach ( $counts as $tag => $count ) {
		$tag_id = $tag_ids[$tag];
		$tag_link = clean_url($tag_links[$tag]);
		$tag = str_replace(' ', '&nbsp;', wp_specialchars( $tag ));
		$a[] = "\t<option value='$tag_link'>$tag ($count)</option>";
	}

	switch ( $format ) :
	case 'array' :
		$return =& $a;
		break;
	case 'list' :
		$return = "<ul class='wp-tag-cloud'>\n\t<li>";
		$return .= join("</li>\n\t<li>", $a);
		$return .= "</li>\n</ul>\n";
		break;
	default :
		$return = join("\n", $a);
		break;
	endswitch;

	return apply_filters( 'dropdown_generate_tag_cloud', $return, $tags, $args );
}
?>

Now, to finalize your dropdown menu you have to open the theme file where you want the list to be displayed (i.e. sidebar.php) and insert the following code:

<select name="tag-dropdown" onchange="document.location.href=this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;">
	<option value="#">Liste d'auteurs</option>
	<?php dropdown_tag_cloud('number=0&order=asc'); ?>
</select>

Custom “Read More” Links for Your Posts

This is a really useful hack if you want to better define or customize the look of your “Read More” links for posts. The first thing you have to do is to edit your posts and create custom fields. Give them custom_more as a key, and whatever text you want to be displayed as the value. Then you have to edit your index.php file (and also your category.php, search.php, etc) and find a line similar to this:

the_content("Read more");

Now just replace it with this code:

<?php $custommore = get_post_meta($post->ID, 'custom_more', true); ?>
<?php if (!$custommore) { $custommore = 'Read More &raquo;'; } ?>
<?php the_content($custommore); ?>

Scheduling Posts for RSS

If you regularly publish articles and you care about the quality of your posts then this is a good hack for you. The main purpose of this hack is that it lets you schedule your posts to be viewed in your RSS at a later time, this will allow you enough time to get those last minute fixes and additions in before your post is forever published in your feed. Place the following code in your .htaccess file. In order to change the length of the delay, change the value of the $waitvariable on line 9.

function publish_later_on_feed($where) {
	global $wpdb;

	if ( is_feed() ) {
		// timestamp in WP-format
		$now = gmdate('Y-m-d H:i:s');

		// value for wait; + device
		$wait = '5'; // integer

		// http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/date-and-time-functions.html#function_timestampdiff
		$device = 'MINUTE'; //MINUTE, HOUR, DAY, WEEK, MONTH, YEAR

		// add SQL-sytax to default $where
		$where .= " AND TIMESTAMPDIFF($device, $wpdb->posts.post_date_gmt, '$now') > $wait ";
	}
	return $where;
}

add_filter('posts_where', 'publish_later_on_feed');

Display the Most Commented Posts of 2009

As the New Year is about to role in, it would be fun and resourceful to let your readers know which of your posts were most popular in the past year. This hack will allow your visitors to view the top 10 most commented/popular posts of 2009. This is a great way to give your posts a second shot at being noticed. In order to do this, you’ll need to place the following code on your sidebar.php file, or wherever else you’d like on your theme:

<ul>
<?php
$result = $wpdb->get_results("SELECT comment_count,ID,post_title, post_date FROM $wpdb->posts WHERE post_date BETWEEN '2009-01-01' AND '2009-12-31' ORDER BY comment_count DESC LIMIT 0 , 10");

foreach ($result as $topten) {
    $postid = $topten->ID;
    $title = $topten->post_title;
    $commentcount = $topten->comment_count;
    if ($commentcount != 0) {
    ?>
         <li></li>
    <?php }
}
?>
</ul>

Allow Only Your IP Address to Access the wp-admin Directory

If you don’t have multiple writers or contributors to your blog, then realistically speaking only you should be allowed to visit the wp-admin directory. Especially since a great deal of security risks entail the wp-admin directory. All you have to do is enter your static IP adress on line 8. You can add more IPs if needed, by creating a new line. Place the following in your .htaccess file.

AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName "Example Access Control"
AuthType Basic
<LIMIT GET>
order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from xx.xx.xx.xx
</LIMIT>

Styling Your WordPress Comments

When your blog has lots of comments, then it’s a great way to get visitors to interact more by styling the way your comments are displayed. If this is what you’re looking to to, then open your comments.php file and replace your comments loop with the following code:

<ol id="commentlist">
<?php foreach ($comments as $comment) : ?>
	<?php // The extra stuff to get commenter's role
	$user_id = $comment->user_id;
	$role = ( isset( $roles[$user_id] ) ? $roles[$user_id] : '' );
	?>
	<li class="<?php echo $role; ?>">
	<p>By <?php comment_author_link() ?> - <?php comment_date() ?></p>
	<?php comment_text() ?>
	</li>
<?php endforeach; ?>
</ol>

Now to structure your comment you’ll need to open your style.css file and place the following code:

#commentlist li { border:2px solid white; } /* not logged or subscriber */
#commentlist li.administrator { border:2px solid red } /* blog admin */
#commentlist li.editor { border:2px solid blue } /* editor */

Remove Widget Areas on Your Homepage

If your WordPress powered site is more than just a blog, then you probably want to get rid of the widget areas in your default sidebar and create your own. This hack doesn’t require any editing, just code insertion. Now, all you need to do is add the following to your functions.php file:

<?php
add_filter( 'sidebars_widgets', 'disable_all_widgets' );

function disable_all_widgets( $sidebars_widgets ) {
	if ( is_home() )
		$sidebars_widgets = array( false );
	return $sidebars_widgets;
}
?>

Insert Author Bio for Each Post

A multi-writer blog usually means everyone who writes or contributes a post will have section that speaks about them. If your blog doesn’t have this feature, then start giving your authors proper credit by inserting the following code into your functions.php file. An author bio will be automatically be displayed at the end of every post.

function get_author_bio ($content=''){
    global $post;

    $post_author_name=get_the_author_meta("display_name");
    $post_author_description=get_the_author_meta("description");
    $html="<div class='clearfix' id='about_author'>\n";
    $html.="<img width='80' height='80' class='avatar' src='http://www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=".md5(get_the_author_email()). "&default=".urlencode($GLOBALS['defaultgravatar'])."&size=80&r=PG' alt='PG'/>\n";
    $html.="<div class='author_text'>\n";
    $html.="<h4>Author: ".$post_author_name."</h4>\n";
    $html.= $post_author_description."\n";
    $html.="</div>\n";
    $html.="<div class='clear'></div>\n";
    $content .= $html;
    }

    return $content;
}

add_filter('the_content', 'get_author_bio');

Remove Certain Categories From Being Displayed

Place this code inside The Loop and whichever category you choose, it will not be displayed. This can be an interesting hack for those who only wish to display a certain category to chosen or registered users.

<?php
if ( have_posts() ) : query_posts($query_string .'&cat=-1,-2'); while ( have_posts() ) : the_post();
?>

Redirect Your WordPress Feed to FeedBurner

If you’ve found out how useful FeedBurner really is after you’ve set-up your WordPress site, and you have a few RSS subscribers on your default WordPress feed, then you’ll need to redirect your feed to FeedBurner. Every time a user follows a link to your default feed (i.e. http://www.yourblog.com/feed) they will be redirected to the location of your FeedBurner feed ( i.e. http://feeds.feedburner.com/yourblog). This way, even if a user manages to somehow subscribe to your old RSS feed, they will always be redirected to your new feed. Place the following code in your .htaccess file.

# temp redirect wordpress content feeds to feedburner
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !FeedBurner    [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !FeedValidator [NC]
RewriteRule ^feed/?([_0-9a-z-]+)?/?$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/WebDesignLedger [R=302,NC,L]
</IfModule>

The Pods CMS plugin allows you to create your own content types (pods), and add the fields you need to each pod. Once your content types are set up, you add items to them. This involves filling out a form -- with the input fields being the fields you've created.

As defined by its creators:

Pods is a CMS framework for WordPress. It’s a plugin that sits on top of WordPress, allowing you to add and display your own content types.

Calling Pods a ‘plugin’ is an understatement. It’s one of those WordPress plugins that does so much more than provide some functionality to work with that makes your life a bit easier or makes WordPress that much more useful. Pods has changed the way I work with WordPress. Pods has allowed me to truly use WordPress as the content management system it was born to be. While a ton of great stuff is happening in the core, Pods is giving us what we need to work with today, and it’s spectacular.

Over the next few months, I plan to divulge all I know about Pods in a series of tutorials and articles meant to act as my own personal user guide for Pods. Pods is a big enough system where you can actually work with it in your own style, and I think I’ve done that to an extent. Pods has an entire level of author features that I don’t particularly make use of simply because I prefer to get my hands even dirtier than Pods requires.

An introduction to Pods

As it is defined, Pods is a content management plugin for WordPress. Many people may wonder why a plugin is needed to make WordPress a content management system, doesn’t it do that already? Absolutely, but out of the box, WordPress specifically caters to a few types of content; Posts, Pages, Media, Comments, and Links. WordPress does a ton more (such as categories, tags, users, etc.), but as far as the average user is concerned, those are the major content types you’re able to work with. Themes bring all that managed content together to share with the world, and plugins build on top of that even more.

Many plugins exist to provide you with a new type of content to manage, most often a specific type of content aimed at achieving a specific goal. That’s awesome, and helps tons of people to make that change they’re looking to update on their site. Pods, however, thinks about things in a different way.

Pods provides a platform on which to build your own content types to manage, all the while providing some really advanced functionality having to do with that content. From the User Guide, a Pod is a group of input fields. You can add and arrange any number of the various available input fields to any number of Pods, essentially creating your own custom CMS for each website you build in WordPress.

Finding the happy medium between WordPress core and Pods

So if WordPress is a CMS, and Pods is a plugin that acts as a CMS framework for WordPress, how (and why) can you use them at the same time?

While you can technically accomplish the same functionality with an out-of-the-box copy of WordPress using a crazy blend of nested Pages, categorized Posts, and a ton of Custom Fields, Pods helps abstract that desired ‘next level’ of functionality you’re looking for as a WordPress developer.

Trying to explain what Custom Fields are and how to use them to a client isn’t something I look fondly upon. While it’s super for developers, to the rest of the world it’s terribly bulky and unintuitive. I think Custom Fields are an awesome available resource for plugin developers, but they’re one of those things better left unseen to the novice user. Pods brings the ability to work with custom pieces of data to the client, all the while giving developers a terrific extended platform to build upon. If you find yourself repeatedly using custom fields within your WordPress sites, especially for clients, you’re probably ready for Pods.

You can download it from the official site.

Back in November, we started hearing murmurs that Google was considering whether or not to factor site speed into its search ranking algorithm. In a blog post today, the search giant confirms it is now adding site speed to its list of criteria that could affect your Google ranking.

It’s another step on Google (Google)’s long road toward achieving maximum speed and efficiency. The company even launched a Site Performance tool as part of its Webmaster Tools suite to help assess site performance statistics and make changes accordingly. Today’s blog post recommends a few other tools for evaluating your site’s speed as well, including the Firefox Add-on Page Speed, Yahoo’s YSlow and WebPagetest.

The new site speed criterion isn’t weighted as heavily as something like page relevance, however. Google says less than 1% of actual search queries performed are being affected by the site speed dimension in the current implementation.

When you want to share a file with a friend but don't want to hassle with email attachment limits or running a home server, very little beats a fast online file sharing service. Here's a look at five of your best options.

When you want to share a file with a friend but don’t want to hassle with email attachment limits or running a home server, very little beats a fast online file sharing service. Here’s a look at five of your best options.

Photo by WebWizzard.

Earlier this week we asked you share your favorite tool for online file sharing to update our treatment of the topic from two years prior. (A lot has changed.) Now we’re back to highlight the top five contenders. The following five services take your files to the cloud so you can easily share files with anyone.

Running a home server is a nifty way to share files, but it’s not for everyone; it puts the burden of maintenance, uptime, and speed on your shoulders. In fact, How-To Geek recently walked through how to easily share large files and media with friends by running a dead simple home server using Opera Unite, and while it’s a great solution, online file sharing services are perfect when you want to let someone else handle the logistics.

Drop.io (Web-based, Basic: Free/Premium: From $19/Month)
The drop.io service is available in two primary flavors. The free service supports “file drops” which can consume up to 100MB of storage. Premium services start at $19 a month and expand the available storage from 100MB to 10GB and up, depending on how much storage and how many drops you’d like. Drop.io’s “file drops” are where it really stands out compared to other file-sharing services. File drops are active pools of files to which you can add batches of files, share with others, allow other people to add files and collaborate, and view the media directly from the drop.io’s media viewer.

MediaFire (Web-Based, Basic: Free, Premium: From $7/Month)
MediaFire offers multiple tiers of file sharing. At the most basic you can upload as many files as you want, limited by a 200MB cap per file. Free accounts will hold files for 30 day from the last time they were downloaded. Premium accounts start at $7 a month and boost the file cap to 2GB per file, enable site-to-site transfer to your MediaFire account, enable embeddable Dropbox folders, and offer direct file linking—no MediaFire splashpage when you share a link to a file. The folder-based organization of MediaFire makes it simple to share entire batches of files with others, like vacation photos or project files.

Dropbox (Web-Based/Windows/Mac/Linux, Basic: Free, Premium: From $10/Month)
Dropbox has won over many users by combining online file sharing with local storage and syncing. You can use Dropbox exclusively as a web-based file sharing tool to upload and organize files in folders, easily sharing them with yourself or friends. Grabbing the Dropbox client, however, allows you to share any file from a folder on your computer. Files stored in a local Dropbox folder are automatically synced to Dropbox on the web—useful for all sorts of tricks like syncing your OnteNote notebooks among computers or keeping your password keyrings up to date.

RapidShare (Web-Based, Basic: Free, Premium: From $9/Month)
The RapidShare service has multiple layers of user accounts which, at first glance, can be quite confusing to a new user. Without signing up you can upload a single file of 200MB, and your file can then be downloaded up to 10 times—perfect for just sharing a file with a few friends. When you upload files, you’re offered the chance to set up a free “collector’s” account which gives you further options to store and organize your files. Collector’s accounts accumulate points, which you can convert into a premium account—but no clear explanation of the process is anywhere to be found on the RapidShare site. Purchasing a premium account boosts your storage to 20GB and raises your per-file-cap to 2GB.

Megaupload (Web-Based, Basic: Free, Premium: From $10/Month)
Megaupload, like other popular fire-and-forget file sharing tools, has three tiers of service. You can share files with no sign up at all—they’ll be limited to 500MB in size, have a 45 second splash page when downloaded, and be given lower priority in the server queue. Signing up for a free account boosts your priority in the queue, raises your maximum file size limit to 2GB, and gives you 200GB of online storage—not bad for a free account. Premium accounts give you unlimited storage, unlimited file size, remove the wait time for downloading, and enable a host of features like batch downloading, password protection for files, and support for FTP and direct HTTP linking.

When you want to share a file with a friend but don’t want to hassle with email attachment limits or running a home server, very little beats a fast online file sharing service. Here’s a look at five of your best options.Photo by WebWizzard.

The team of Terra Power and Toshiba will focus on nuclear traveling wave reactor technology(TWR),which is a new type of small nuclear reactor design that can use the waste byproduct of the enrichment process i.e. It can consume depleted uranium as fuel. TWR’s have been under development since the 1990’s, but TerraPower is one of the first companies to have come up with a implementable design for this technology.

The core benefit that this design will offer is that reactor will not have to be refueled or have its waste removed till the time it is dead, which is easily about a couple hundred years.

Using waste uranium reduces the amount of waste in the overall nuclear life cycle, and extends the available supply of the world’s uranium for nuclear by many times. TerraPower CEO explained that the As per TerraPower CEO, the operation of a traveling wave reactor can be demonstrated in less than ten years, and commercial deployment can begin in less than fifteen years.

Let’s hope that the combination of two technology giants helps meet power needs of the world’s poor without contributing to global warming.

There are hundreds of ways out there on how to improve the visibility of your websites or blogs, and at times that information can drive you out of your focus on your Search Engine Optimization campaign. To prevent what we usually call as “information overload”, I have set up a brief 10 to-do list.

Do the actions listed below for a consistent three months and see the results for your websites or blogs:

Constantly update your content: if you want more traffic, you have to continuously update your content. People will not visit your websites if they do not have good and high quality content. Without a constant update, there will not be any returning visitors as well.

Apply good design and layout: if your website is messy on its designs and navigations then visitors will leave at the very moment they arrive on your website. Make sure you apply good design, content-focused with proper color schemes.

Use your own domain name: using a professional looking top level domain name will make you look more professional and will then make visitors to trust you more as a serious business entity. The cost of a domain name is as little as US$8 per year and it can make a serious difference than having a free domain

Use StumbleUpon: I have had a lot of success using StumbleUpon for my websites, especially those specifically talk about a specific niche, such as soccer. When you put an interesting article from your website on StumbleUpon, then people will rate it higher and in turn make the article more popular. Remember to also make friends and connections in StumbleUpon to increase your personal popularity and credibility on the website.

Become a guest poster: offer your unique writings and articles to other people’s blogs. People love to get free and high quality blog content. In your article, make sure you put a link back to your website. Again, make sure that the article you submit as a guest blogger is unique and cannot be found on any other blogs.

Put keywords on images: if you use images on your blog posts, then it is crucial for you to give them relevant title and tag them with relevant keywords. In my soccer website, a large portion of my visitors come from people looking for soccer wallpaper from Google’s image search.

Comments, comments and comments: when you give comments, people will know that you give notice, and they will appreciate that. However, please do not spam. Some people just love to put comments such as “Hi, nice blog, how about visiting mine?”. Those kind of comments will be removed without question and you will only offend your blogger peers.

Use MyBlogLog: sign up to MyBlogLog and join to all the communities available there and you will see visitors start coming from MyBlogLog.

Do not waste your time: don’t waste your time with “get rich quick scheme” promises. Concentrate on giving quality content, then the traffic and the money will come.

Most important, always review your stats: by reviewing your sites’ statistics using Google Analytical tool, you will find out what kind of keywords that your visitors use to come across your site and which articles that are the most appealing for them. The results of your review can then be used for more effective and efficient future campaigns.

We’ve all heard of, played with or used the most popular Facebook applications — Scrabulous, Owned! and (Lil) Green Patch come to mind. But what about the not-as-popular Facebook applications? With more than 27,000 apps to choose from, and the number growing daily, there are plenty of diamonds in the rough that may be unknown, but still stand out because they are particularly interesting, unique, viral or just darn fun.

Here are 10 Facebook applications that you probably have never heard of — but should.

1) Traveler IQ Challenge — This game tests players to find out the answer the question “How well do you know your world?” As a clock counts down, the game presents players with world cities, famous places and world capitals, at various skill levels. Players can only advance to the next level after reaching a high enough score. When players are done with the round, they get a ranking — an overall ranking, and a ranking among their friends — and they are given the opportunity to “challenge their friends” to compete. As well as being educational, this game is addictive. The interface is clean and easy-to-use, and the sense of urgency that the ticking clock provides is excellent.

2) iDescribe — This application is based on the premise that people like to know what their friends think of them. The application makes it easy for friends to pick 5 words that best describe each other. The genius of this app lies in its inherent viral nature — after signing up for iDescribe, there is no way to use it unless your friends are using it, too. In fact, when users sign up for the service and don’t immediately invite their friends, they are reminded: “You haven’t invited any of your friends to iDescribe! So you may not be described back by as many people as you would if you invite some friends!”

3) Web Presence — This application is really simple and useful. It allows users to feature their “social profile” by linking to their profile pages on various other social networking sites. This comes in handy for both business and personal use, as users can add a Web site or blog URL, or link to their profiles on LinkedIn, MySpace, Flickr, Twitter or any other site. There are some features that seem missing here — it would be helpful if the app prompted users on the services that they could enter, it would be nice to be able to reorder the list, and the RSS integration that’s coming in the future will be great — but this is still a simple, easy-to-use and helpful application that could quickly benefit every Facebook user.

4) Sketch Me — This is another fun and very easy to use app. As soon as the application is installed, it immediately takes the user’s profile picture and creates a pencil sketch of the image. Once the user’s friends see their pencil sketched picture, they’ll want one of their own.

5) TWENTY20 Cricket — First a huge disclaimer — I don’t play cricket or know how to play cricket. But even so, this is a really cool game. The best thing about TWENTY20 Cricket is that when a user signs up, they build a team made up of themselves and 14 friends. Without the friends, there’s no game. And the application encourages continued use; the more that users “train” on playing, the more points they earn (and the more likely they are to win in head-to-head challenges).

6) Launch A Package — This is the only corporate app that made the list, and it’s from FedEx. The tool lets you create a package to send to a friend, placing “gifts,” photos or other attachments in a well-branded FedEx box. The most fun comes at the end of the process when the sender gets to slingshot the package to their friend — who then has to download the application to open the package on their end.

7) Countdown — The concept here is simple — this application lets you set a date, and countdown to an event with a ticker that runs on a user’s profile. Since everyone is looking forward to something, this app has endless utility.

  Who Has The Biggest Brain? — Part game, part IQ test, this application is hugely addictive. Besides having a great name, the application tests users in four different categories — analysis, calculation, memory and visual processing. At the end of the test, users are given a ranking. They are then compared to their friends who took the test, as well as the rest of the world and their hometown. This application continues to spread as people compete against their friends (and their own personal-best scores) to get a better ranking.

9) Where I’ve Been — This is another travel-related application, but instead of being a game, it allows users to plot on a world map the places they’ve visited, lived and want to go. After filling out their personal profile, users can share/compare maps with their friends. The more places a person’s been, the more addictive this application becomes — and the more that the creators of the app will reach their target audience. (Smart!)

10) Pixton Comics — This may be the best “Facebook application” that isn’t really a Facebook application. Although you can reach the service through Facebook, users actually have to access the app on the Pixton Comics’ site. Once through the registration hoopla, users can create comics without having to draw — either by choosing from templates that are available on the site, or by building their own comic from scratch. Once built, the comic can be embedded in any site — including Facebook.

A lot of people are still on the learning curve for WordPress, so I would like to clear some myths that exist in the blogosphere about WordPress.

1. WordPress is a Website Builder.

No Sherlock, WordPress is a blogging CMS and that is a fact. Although, there are themes and plugins which will make your WordPress blog look like a website.

2. I can use all the plugins in the world and they will rise my WordPress blog to fame.

I am sorry to say but you are mistaken if you think so. WordPress is a blogger’s nightmare when it comes to CPU usage. It can bring any kind of server (even enterprise ones) to its knees and most of the plugins are not optimized for their SQL queries. Plugins are notorious for causing high CPU usage on servers. So, be careful on what and how many plugins you activate on your blog.

3. WordPress is limited to WordPress.com

Many new users think what WordPress can only be used if they have an account on WordPress.com. It’s not so. Yes, WordPress.com offers free blogs to people who do not have hosting or a domain name but on the other hand, WordPress.org offers WordPress in the form of a software that can be downloaded and installed either locally (if you are running a server) or on your own hosting if you have any.

4. I can use blogger templates on WordPress and vice versa.

No. You cannot do that because coding for both kind of templates differs in many ways. Although, there are people who convert templates from one platform to another.

5. WordPress is only for hobby blogs.

Please search a little more, and you will find that a heap of professional bloggers are using WordPress as their blogging platform.

6. It’s easy for WordPress blogs to get hacked.

No. Just update your WordPress installation to the latest one and keep a track on the released security fixes. WordPress is as secure as any other normal website.

7. WordPress has little or no documentation.

Not true. If you look at http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page, you will find almost everything that you ever needed to know about WordPress. Also, if you search the Internet, you can find a heap of information readily available.

8. What… Only 10 widgets to use on my sidebars??

Please lookup Google.com and you will find lots of plugins that extend this functionality and allow you unlimited widgets on your sidebars. For example, this one :- http://thephppro.com/plugins/tppSidebarPageSections/

9. Where do I buy WordPress from?

Good question. I wish someone could charge you for asking that, but WordPress is a free software.
