A new study has linked ecosystem changes in many temperate North American and Western European lakes to climate warning.

The study, conducted by researchers at Queen’s University and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment in Canada, reports that striking changes are now occurring in many temperate lakes similar to those previously observed in the rapidly warming Arctic, although typically many decades later.

“Our findings suggest that ecologically important changes are already under way in temperate lakes,” said Queen’s Biology research scientist, Dr. Kathleen Ruhland, from the university’s Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab (PEARL) and lead author of the study.

The scientists studied changes over the last few decades in the species composition of small, microscopic algae preserved in sediments from more than 200 lake systems in the northern hemisphere.

These algae dominate the plankton that float at or near the surface of lakes, and serve as food for other larger organisms.

Striking ecosystem changes were recorded from a large suite of lakes from Arctic, alpine and temperate ecozones in North America and western Europe.

Aquatic ecosystem changes across the circumpolar Arctic were found to occur in the late-19th and early 20th centuries.

These were similar to shifts in algal communities, indicating decreased ice cover and related changes, over the last few decades in the temperate lakes.

“As expected, these changes occurred earlier – by about 100 years – in highly sensitive Arctic lakes, compared with temperate regions,” said Dr. Smol, recipient of the 2004 Herzberg Gold Medal as Canada’s top scientist.

In a detailed study from Whitefish Bay, Lake of the Woods, located in northwestern Ontario, strong relationships were found between changes in the lake algae and long-term changes in air temperature and ice-out records.

The authors believe that, although the study was focused on algae preserved in lake sediments, changes to other parts of the aquatic ecosystem are also likely.

“The widespread occurrence of these trends is particularly troubling as they suggest that climatically-induced ecological thresholds have already been crossed, even with temperature increases that are below projected future warming scenarios for these regions,” said Dr. Paterson.

The authors warn that if the rate and magnitude of temperature increases continue, it is likely that new ecological thresholds will be surpassed, many of which may be unexpected.

“We are entering unchartered territory, the effects of which can cascade throughout the entire ecosystem,” concluded Dr. Smol.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2008) — Drawing on records dating back to the journals of Henry David Thoreau, scientists at Harvard University have found that different plant families near Walden Pond have borne the effects of climate change in strikingly different ways. Some of the plant families hit hardest by global warming have included beloved species like lilies, orchids, violets, roses, and dogwoods.

Over the past 150 years, some of the plants in Thoreau’s woods have shifted their flowering time by as much as three weeks as spring temperatures have risen, the researchers say, while others have been less flexible. Many plant families that have proven unable to adjust their flowering time have experienced sharp declines or even elimination from the local landscape — the fate of nearly two-thirds of the plants Thoreau found in the 1850s around Walden Pond in Concord, Mass.

“It had been thought that climate change would result in uniform shifts across plant species, but our work shows that plant species do not respond to climate change uniformly or randomly,” says Charles C. Davis, assistant professor of organismic and evolutionary biology in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. “Some plants around Walden Pond have been quite resilient in the face of climate change, while others have fared far worse. Closely related species that are not able to adjust their flowering times in the face of rising temperatures are decreasing in abundance.”

Some 27 percent of all species Thoreau recorded in the mid-19th century are now locally extinct, and another 36 percent are so sparse that extinction may be imminent. Plant families that have been especially hard-hit by global warming have included lilies, orchids, buttercups, violets, roses, dogwoods, and mints. Many of the gainers have been weedier mustards and knotweeds, along with various non-native species.

“The species harmed by climate change are among the most charismatic found in the New England landscape,” Davis says. Scientists can be reasonably confident these losses have resulted from climate change and not habitat loss, he adds, since 60 percent of the land in Concord has remained protected or undeveloped since Thoreau’s observations of the area between 1851 and 1858.

Understanding the decline of species abundance over time is constrained by the limited availability of historic data. Davis’ work with Harvard graduate students Charles Willis and Brad Ruhfel combines contemporary data, collected by scientists Richard Primack and Abraham Miller-Rushing at Boston University, with Thoreau’s records from his time spent at Walden Pond. Thoreau kept meticulous notes documenting the natural history of the region, plant species occurrences, and flowering times. Since then, botanists have resurveyed the territory to create a unique, community-level perspective covering 150 years. During this period, the mean annual temperature in the Concord area has increased by 2.4 degrees Celsius, or 4.3 degrees Fahrenheit.

“The plants in our survey now flower, on average, one week earlier in the spring than their ancestors did in Thoreau’s time,” Davis says. “However, there is wide variation among plant families. Some have shown no shift in flowering at all, while others now bloom 16 to 20 days earlier in the spring.”

As mean annual temperatures increase, plants can adjust their growth patterns in several ways. For example, forests shift toward the poles, alpine tree lines move up mountains to higher altitudes, and flowering time can shift. During eras of climate change, plants that cannot adjust their flowering schedule — and thus flower at sub-optimal times — may experience dramatic declines in population size and local extinction.

The work appears this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Davis’ co-authors are Harvard graduate students Charles Willis and Brad Ruhfel and Richard Primack and Abraham Miller-Rushing of Boston University. Their work was supported by the National Science Foundation.

Ecology has become a critical issue in India with a lot of organisations and the Union Government showing particular interest in it. The key element, of course, is global warming and the steady erosion of ozone layer because of carbon di oxide emissions from several sources into the atmosphere.
The main culpable sources are automobile, realty and raw materials sectors. With crude oil price ruling high its impact on fuel and the prices of essential commodites is considerable. Inflation is 11 per cent now and the steady grabbing of farm land in the outskirts of every city – Tier 1 and Tier 2 – has virtually cut into farm production. Pulses and vegetables, at this rate, will be out of pace with demand and the prices will leave a yawn behind. So far as the middle income group is concerned it would mean an erosion to the extent of 20 per cent in their buying power. Only the upper income group will be able to offset the rise while lower income group and those below the poverty line will expect the PDS to meet their needs.

With realty sector, the position is optimistic because of the heavy inflow of foreign funds and the tie ups local builders get into with them. Builders are concerned with the profit margin and would compromise on the price level so long as it does not sting their purse. Their concern for ecology is even less than for raw materials and could always put up attractive landscaping to trumpet their eco concerns. But their need for land is consistent and they would branch out into the outskirts so long as the buyers are there. It means extension of housing/commercial complexes geographically is an undeniable fact. Artificial increase in land value has not been arrested and the government seems to be able to do little about it. So urbanisation will be total but quality life is beyond anybody’s comprehension.

The same yardstick applies to automobile or any other core sector because they are all ruled by price tyranny. Globalisation has made it impossible for a particular country to keep price levels reachable because of interdependent economies.

There is need for eco rating now. It means that every sector – realty, automobile or engineering – must be allowed to have their physical resources in place without upsetting ecology. Tax must be so computed to penalise them for the level of harm to ecology and conversely give them relief to the extent of contribution to protecting ecology. Eco rating deserves a deeper attention than is getting now.

Environmental sustainability has become the catchword now. And green stocks have caught the eye of investors though they are necessarily slow burn out funds. It will pay in the long run, say over 15 year period. RETIREES For those on the verge of superannuation choosing the right firms matter, because the returns after 10-15 years must be substantial. Some smaller firms may burn out in due course and investing in them in these environment-conscious times might backfireas the returns in 4-5 years could be slow or nothing. One has to go in for firms that have top of the list in the field. TOP COMPANIES There are any companies that specialise in environment friendly technologies and services. Climate change has caught the attention of governments the world over and efforts are directed towards rewarding those companies thatcontribute to reduction in emissions of CO2 and other noxious gases. Fuel Tech, a U.S.Comapny specialises in reducing emissions from coal burning power stations. Its shares have shot up six times in the last three years. Wind turbines are a major branch of efforts to reduce global warming. Many companies the world over have put in huge investments in this area. Clipper Windpower, whose shares quadrupled since 2005 in the London market, has been a wellknown operator in the area. Harnessing power from the sea or natural streams has become a major exercise in many countries of Europe. In India it is still in the backstage though the government is seriously along the lines. Tidal power, like nuclear energy, can reduce power cost by a huge margin and is also climate friendly. General Electric(GE)has been into diverse environmentally friendly businesses and services from wind turbines to specialist lighting. Toyota is another major player which has been intent on turning out fuel-efficient hybrid cars. It is patent that the focus now is on a range of services from wind turbines to use of wood and therefore protection of forests. Many companies, both big and small, have ventured into this area. Firms that are bent on wind turbines or recycling services have a potential market to play on and investors eager to put their money in. GREEN BUILDINGS There has been a surge in demand for timber across the world and hence efforts are taken to protect forests. Timber makes excellent insulating material in buildings. With green buildings fast picking up all over and carbon credit rating/trading simultaneously evolving the role of timber and firms marketing it will grow. Their stocks are going to be much anticipated. There are five stocks that speculators believe will do well in the near future. They are: Gamesa, a Spanish wind turbine manufacturer whose shares have doubled in the last few years, Fuel Tech, First Group which is running buses across U.K.and North America , RPS Group , a business consultancy firm concerned with development of natural resources and Tomra, a Scandinavian group specialising in waste management through recycling. However there are mitigating factors as experts in the field warn. The shares are influenced by external drivers too, with less predictable factors such as the broader equity market and investor risk-appetite contributing to performance. All that is needed is a bit of research and understanding. Then the investment is safe.

“There is none amongst the believers who plants a tree, or sows a seed, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats thereof, but it is regarded as having given a charitable gift [for which there is great recompense].” [Al-Bukhari, III:513].The idea of the Prophet Mohammed as a pioneer of environmentalism will initially strike many as strange: indeed, the term “environment” and related concepts like “ecology”, “environmental awareness” and “sustainability”, are modern-day inventions, terms that were formulated in the face of the growing concerns about the contemporary state of the natural world around us.

And yet a closer reading of the hadith, the body of work that recounts significant events in the Prophet’s life, reveals that he was a staunch advocate of environmental protection. One could say he was an “environmentalist avant la lettre”, a pioneer in the domain of conservation, sustainable development and resource management, and one who constantly sought to maintain a harmonious balance between man and nature. From all accounts of his life and deeds, we read that the Prophet had a profound respect for fauna and flora, as well as an almost visceral connection to the four elements, earth, water, fire and air.

He was a strong proponent of the sustainable use and cultivation of land and water, proper treatment of animals, plants and birds, and the equal rights of users. In this context the modernity of the Prophet’s view of the environment and the concepts he introduced to his followers is particularly striking; certain passages of the hadith could easily be mistaken for discussions about contemporary environmental issues.

Three Principles

The Prophet’s environmental philosophy is first of all holistic: it assumes a fundamental link and interdependency between all natural elements and bases its teachings on the premise that if man abuses or exhausts one element, the natural world as a whole will suffer direct consequences. This belief is nowhere formulated in one concise phrase; it is rather an underlying principle that forms the foundation of all the Prophet’s actions and words, a life philosophy that defined him as a person.

The three most important principles of the Prophet’s philosophy of nature are based on the Qur’anic teachings and the concepts of tawhid (unity), khalifa (stewardship) and amana (trust).

Tawhid, the oneness of God, is a cornerstone of the Islamic faith. It recognizes the fact that there is one absolute Creator and that man is responsible to Him for all his actions: “To God belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth, for God encompasses everything [4:126].” The Prophet acknowledges that God’s knowledge and power covers everything. Therefore abusing one of his creations, whether it is a living being or a natural resource, is a sin. The Prophet considered all of God’s creations to be equal before God and he believed animals, but also land, forests and watercourses should have rights.

The concepts of khalifa, stewardship, and amana, trust, emerge from the principle of tawhid. The Qur’an explains that mankind holds a privileged position among God’s creations on earth: he is chosen as khalifa, “vice-regent” and carries the responsibility of caring for God’s earthly creations. Each individual is given this task and privilege in the form of God’s trust. But the Qur’an repeatedly warns believers against arrogance: they are no better than other creatures. “No creature is there on earth nor a bird flying with its wings but they are nations like you [6:38]”; “Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of man; but most people know not [40:57]”.

The Prophet believed that the universe and the creations in it – animals, plants, water, land – were not created for mankind. Man is allowed to use the resources but he can never own them. Thus while Islam allows land ownership, it has limitations: an owner can, for example, only own land if he uses it; once he ceases to use it, he has to part with his possession.

The Prophet recognized man’s responsibility to God but always maintained humility. Thus he said: “When doomsday comes, if someone has a palm shoot in his hand, he should plant it,” suggesting that even when all hope is lost for mankind, one should sustain nature’s growth. He believed that nature remains a good in itself, even if man does not benefit from it.

Similarly, the Prophet incited believers to share the earth’s resources. He said: “Muslims share alike in three things – water, herbage and fire,” and he considered it a sin to withhold water from the thirsty. “No one can refuse surplus water without sinning against Allah and against man” [Mishkat al Masabih].

The Prophet’s attitude towards sustainable use of land, conservation of water and the treatment of animals is a further illustration of the humility of his environmental philosophy.

Sustainable Use of Land

“The earth has been created for me as a mosque and as a means of purification.” [Al-Bukhari I:331] With these words the Prophet emphasizes the sacred nature of earth or soil, not only as a pure entity but also as a purifying agent. This reverence towards soil is also demonstrated in the ritual of tayammum, or “dry wudu” which permits the use of dust in the performance of ritual purification before prayer when water is not available.

The Prophet saw earth as subservient to man, but recognised that it should not be overexploited or abused, and that it had rights, like the trees and wildlife living on it. In order to protect land, forests and wildlife, the Prophet created inviolable zones known as hima and haram, in which resources were to be left untouched. Both are still in use today: haram areas are often drawn up around wells and water sources to protect the groundwater table from over-pumping. Hima applies particularly to wildlife and forestry and usually designates an area of land where grazing and woodcutting are restricted, or where certain animal species are protected.

The Prophet not only encouraged the sustainable use of fertile lands, he also told his followers of the benefits of making unused land productive: planting a tree, sowing a seed and irrigating dry land were all regarded as charitable deeds. “Whoever brings dead land to life, that is, cultivates wasteland, for him is a reward therein.” Thus any person who irrigates a plot of “dead”, or desert land becomes its rightful owner.

Conservation of Water

In the harsh desert environment where the Prophet lived, water was synonymous to life. Water was a gift from God, the source of all life on earth as is testified in the Qur’an: “We made from water every living thing” [21:30]. The Qur’an constantly reminds believers that they are but the guardians of God’s creation on earth and that they should never take this creation for granted: “Consider the water which you drink. Was it you that brought it down from the rain cloud or We? If We had pleased, We could make it bitter” [56:68-70].

Saving water and safeguarding its purity were two important issues for the Prophet: we have seen that his concern about the sustainable use of water led to the creation of haram zones in the vicinity of water sources. But even when water was abundant, he advocated thriftiness: thus he recommended that believers perform wudu no more than three times, even if they were near to a flowing spring or river. The theologian El-Bukhari added: “ The men of science disapprove of exaggeration and also of exceeding the number of ablutions of the Prophet.” The Prophet also warned against water pollution by forbidding urination in stagnant water.

The Treatment of Animals:

“If anyone wrongfully kills even a sparrow, let alone anything greater, he will face God’s interrogation” [Mishkat al Masabih]. These words reflect the great reverence, respect and love that the Prophet always showed towards animals. He believed that as part of God’s creation, animals should be treated with dignity, and the hadith contains a large collection of traditions, admonitions and stories about his relationship to animals. It shows that he had particular consideration for horses and camels: to him they were valiant companions during journey and battle, and he found great solace and wisdom in their presence as the following tradition reveals: “In the forehead of horses are tied up welfare and bliss until the Day of Resurrection.”

Even in the slaughter of animals, the Prophet showed great gentleness and sensitivity. While he did not practice vegetarianism, the hadiths clearly show that the Prophet was extremely sensitive to the suffering of animals, almost as though he shared their pain viscerally. Thus he recommends using sharp knives and a good method so that the animal can die a quick death with as little pain as possible. He also warned against slaughtering an animal in the presence of other animals, or letting the animal witness the sharpening of blades: to him that was equal to “slaughtering the animal twice” and he emphatically condemned such practices as “abominable”.

Conclusion

It is impossible to do justice to the full scope and significance of Prophet Mohammed’s environmental philosophy in this short article. His holistic view of nature and his understanding of man’s place within the natural world pioneered environmental awareness within the Muslim community.

Sadly, the harmony that the Prophet advocated between man and his environment has today all too often been lost. As we face the effects of pollution and overexploitation, desertification and water scarcity in some parts of the world and floods and violent storms elsewhere, it is perhaps time for the world community as a whole, Muslims, Christians and Jews, Hindus and Buddhists, atheists and agnostics, to take a leaf out of the Prophet’s book and address the current environmental crisis seriously and wisely.

The peace-loving Bangalorean has been shaken off his reverie and is still not ready to accept the City’s outburst. Our political leaders till now have led a life of peace and calm and have been having their own good time ,making and breaking parties ,never having to worry about such outbursts. Our city had never been on the violence maps barring a few stray incidents ,but now is making breaking news on all the channels on television. Bangalore ,which has always been very endearing to strangers, enveloping everyone into its fold and the citizens co-existing in harmony with all the newcomers is now being thrown off its gears with all this disturbance . It is high time our politicians wake up ,forget their internal differences and get off from the trumpet blowing stage and support the police department to curb this menace before the seeds of hatred and revenge are grown out of proportion devouring everyone in its way.
