The future holds some very innovative and exciting new prospects in terms computer and tech design concepts. Here are 10 we hope we can get our hands on one day soon!

MacBook Touch Concept

A transparent, multitouch display that acts as a control surface on both sides, the MacBook Touch concept is based on one of Apple’s latest patents: using a transparent multitouch display that can work as a control surface whether it’s open or closed. The moment the computer is opened, the surface will display a keyboard or any other kind of user interface.

Toshiba’s Media Server

Merging telephone and TV with wireless HD technology, the Toshiba media server allows you to automatically download media files from your cell phone, using near field communication technology, which can then be displayed from the media server to a wireless HD 1080p TV. The idea is that you can transfer media files in a snap with this easy-to-use octagonal device.
HP LiM (Less is More) Concept

Featuring a 19-inch OLED transparent touchscreen that slides down for better handling, this slick-looking device has a wireless keyboard, virtual trackpad, and uses Bamboo fabric across the aluminum frame.
B-membrane

Eliminating the need for a bulky monitor, the B-membrane, designed by Won-Seok Lee has a built-in projector that can be beamed onto any surface. The membrane keyboard only appears when needed and when not being used as a computer, the projector can be used to produce ambient lighting effects.
Shark Mouse

Designed as an eco-friendly alternative to the regular computer mouse, this shark-like concept is made from recyclable thermoplastic, has removed any extra mouse-parts such as the rest for your palm and has minimum surface contact in order to reduce friction. As sleek as the design is, I’m not sure how comfortable it looks if you’re using it for a longer period of time.
P-ISM Pen-style Personal Computer

The P-ISM is described as a “pen-computer package” includes five functions: a pen-style cellular phone with a handwriting data input, virtual keyboard, a very small projector, camera scanner, and personal ID key with cashless pass function. P-ISMs are connected with one another through short-range wireless technology. The whole set is also connected to the Internet through the cellular phone function. This personal gadget in a minimalist pen style enables the ultimate ubiquitous computing.
Rolltop Computer

The Rolltop is a concept by Orkin Design, which can be rolled up and transported just like a yoga mat. The laptop has a flexible OLED display with multitouch capabilities. With the weight of a mini-notebook, it easily transforms into a graphics tablet, with a 17-inch flat screen that can be used as a primary monitor. It can also be folded into a 13-inch tablet.

Bookshelf

In a future where less is more, the Bookshelf concept seems to have an awful lot of parts to it, but just wait to hear how it works. Resembling and functioning just like a bookshelf, instead of placing books and magazines on this shelf you are placing hardware. The foundation of the computer is its central processing unit, which is a 7-inch cube. The Bookshelf operates with add-on hard drive attachments that are supplied by digital service providers. According to one of it’s designers, Sungho Son, “Digital contents are downloaded through subscriptions, then arranged in each hardware attachment, which are provided by the subscription’s service. The physical configuration of the unit permits users to visually navigate the categories of content as they do with books on a bookshelf.”

The hardware attachments – containing multiple movies, games, or magazines – will vary in width, but its other dimensions will be the same as the Bookshelf cube. As the hardware attachments are added, the Bookshelf becomes its own multimedia library custom-built by its owner.
Yuno PC

Probably the only computer that you can pour a whole cup of coffee into, the Yuno PC incorporates all your important morning alerts from the weather, traffic reports, stocks and more, on its touchscreen display.
Eye-Controlled Computer

A gadget designed to help make a computer controllable for a person with a disability, the camera is locked close to the user’s eye and is programmed to detect the eye’s behaviour, also capable of perceiving head movements. Data from the detector is sent to a control unit and generated into orders the computer will understand. The cursor on the monitor receives all the commands and follows the eyeball. A quick close of the eye is interpreted as a click, whereas a prolonged eye closing means double click.

Being bombarded with spam can be a real nuisance and in a business setting you want to be extra careful about ensuring the safety of your emails. There are different types of anti-spam filtering software available depending on your particular needs. Spam filter software should be: 1) easy to customize (the program should allow you to tweak settings and create ones of your own) 2) offer a wide range of features 3) easy to install 4) reliable (the program should be stable and consistent).

Sherweb for instance, is one of the few hosting providers to include advanced protection free of charge with every hosted exchange mailbox. Sherweb protects its clients with its free anti-spam and antivirus technology that combines MailChannels Traffic Control with Cloudmark intelligent content filtering technology. Traffic Control reduces spam at the connection layer by up to 98%. Traffic Control also stops spam based on the reputation of email senders, rather than the content of messages. The Cloudmark spam detection engine is also quite innovative in that it relies on the collective intelligence of 180 million reporting sources from the Cloudmark Global Threat Network. This provides an extremely rapid response to new and mutating threats.

Here are some top reviewed anti-spam programs that will ensure the best protection against unwanted SPAM.

SPAMfighter

SPAMfighter ranked #1 out of 10 spam filter products which were reviewed and compared on Top Ten Reviews. A community-based spam filter allows users to blacklist or whitelist incoming emails. This means that if a particular email address or domain is blacklisted by a certain number of members of the SPAM fighting community, it will be banned forever. Some highlights of this software include protection against phishing, identity theft and other types of email fraud, protection of all the email accounts on your PC as well as recognition of spam sent as pictures.

CA Anti-Spam Software

CA Anti-Spam software, (former Qurb Anti-Spam software, which won PC Magazine Editor’s Choice for three years running), works immediately upon installation following a quick download. CA Anti-Spam automatically builds your whitelist of approved senders by scanning your saved/sent email and has tight integration with Outlook and Outlook Express. You can download the free 15 day trial and if you are happy with the software you can buy it for $29.99.

Email Remover

Email Remover connects to your ISP and retrieves mail header information (sender, subject, date, etc…) letting you pick mail you don’t want to receive and deleting it from the mail server. It will optionally run your regular email client when it’s done so that you can transfer and read the mail you do want. Best of all, it’s free.

Cloudmark Desktop

Though mentioned briefly at the beginning, Cloudmark is specifically for Outlook / Outlook Express users, and relies on the collective opinion of over one million+ users. Cloudmark will inconspicuously work away removing unwanted mail from your Inbox. One of the best features about this product is that it will never delete your genuine personal mail by incorrectly classifying it as spam. The Cloudmark networking approach catches phishing hoaxes as well as spam.
ChoiceMail

With ChoiceMail you can accept and reject emails by domain, IP address, or block email from known spam senders. ChoiceMail assumes everything is spam until you grant permission to let it through. You may find the setup process a little long and tedious at first. Once you’re done however, you will find that this is a worthwhile tool. ChoiceMail has some built-in rules but also allows you to create your own. Overall, the program does an excellent job controlling spam using a permission-based method. This product costs $29.95.

I am big fan of typography myself and was surprised I haven’t done any good font collection yet! While doing research I was amazed how many really high quality fonts are available for free. And now with Sifr and similar tools you can use any font in your web-design actually, but if you are graphic designer you get even bigger enjoyment through such detailed and beautiful fonts. Balance between readability, elegance and use fonts with artistic approach to get best out of them, really that’s all you need to do. And by the way I am thinking about inspiring and effective typography article in soon future to show you very best examples – stay with us – get inspired and save your time because research has been done already for you!

Finally be sure to check license to these fonts, they may be free but some of them require reference or may not be used for commercial projects for free, although most of them are.

We’ve all heard of, played with or used the most popular Facebook applications — Scrabulous, Owned! and (Lil) Green Patch come to mind. But what about the not-as-popular Facebook applications? With more than 27,000 apps to choose from, and the number growing daily, there are plenty of diamonds in the rough that may be unknown, but still stand out because they are particularly interesting, unique, viral or just darn fun.

Here are 10 Facebook applications that you probably have never heard of — but should.

1) Traveler IQ Challenge — This game tests players to find out the answer the question “How well do you know your world?” As a clock counts down, the game presents players with world cities, famous places and world capitals, at various skill levels. Players can only advance to the next level after reaching a high enough score. When players are done with the round, they get a ranking — an overall ranking, and a ranking among their friends — and they are given the opportunity to “challenge their friends” to compete. As well as being educational, this game is addictive. The interface is clean and easy-to-use, and the sense of urgency that the ticking clock provides is excellent.

2) iDescribe — This application is based on the premise that people like to know what their friends think of them. The application makes it easy for friends to pick 5 words that best describe each other. The genius of this app lies in its inherent viral nature — after signing up for iDescribe, there is no way to use it unless your friends are using it, too. In fact, when users sign up for the service and don’t immediately invite their friends, they are reminded: “You haven’t invited any of your friends to iDescribe! So you may not be described back by as many people as you would if you invite some friends!”

3) Web Presence — This application is really simple and useful. It allows users to feature their “social profile” by linking to their profile pages on various other social networking sites. This comes in handy for both business and personal use, as users can add a Web site or blog URL, or link to their profiles on LinkedIn, MySpace, Flickr, Twitter or any other site. There are some features that seem missing here — it would be helpful if the app prompted users on the services that they could enter, it would be nice to be able to reorder the list, and the RSS integration that’s coming in the future will be great — but this is still a simple, easy-to-use and helpful application that could quickly benefit every Facebook user.

4) Sketch Me — This is another fun and very easy to use app. As soon as the application is installed, it immediately takes the user’s profile picture and creates a pencil sketch of the image. Once the user’s friends see their pencil sketched picture, they’ll want one of their own.

5) TWENTY20 Cricket — First a huge disclaimer — I don’t play cricket or know how to play cricket. But even so, this is a really cool game. The best thing about TWENTY20 Cricket is that when a user signs up, they build a team made up of themselves and 14 friends. Without the friends, there’s no game. And the application encourages continued use; the more that users “train” on playing, the more points they earn (and the more likely they are to win in head-to-head challenges).

6) Launch A Package — This is the only corporate app that made the list, and it’s from FedEx. The tool lets you create a package to send to a friend, placing “gifts,” photos or other attachments in a well-branded FedEx box. The most fun comes at the end of the process when the sender gets to slingshot the package to their friend — who then has to download the application to open the package on their end.

7) Countdown — The concept here is simple — this application lets you set a date, and countdown to an event with a ticker that runs on a user’s profile. Since everyone is looking forward to something, this app has endless utility.

Who Has The Biggest Brain? — Part game, part IQ test, this application is hugely addictive. Besides having a great name, the application tests users in four different categories — analysis, calculation, memory and visual processing. At the end of the test, users are given a ranking. They are then compared to their friends who took the test, as well as the rest of the world and their hometown. This application continues to spread as people compete against their friends (and their own personal-best scores) to get a better ranking.

9) Where I’ve Been — This is another travel-related application, but instead of being a game, it allows users to plot on a world map the places they’ve visited, lived and want to go. After filling out their personal profile, users can share/compare maps with their friends. The more places a person’s been, the more addictive this application becomes — and the more that the creators of the app will reach their target audience. (Smart!)

10) Pixton Comics — This may be the best “Facebook application” that isn’t really a Facebook application. Although you can reach the service through Facebook, users actually have to access the app on the Pixton Comics’ site. Once through the registration hoopla, users can create comics without having to draw — either by choosing from templates that are available on the site, or by building their own comic from scratch. Once built, the comic can be embedded in any site — including Facebook.

When will IE6 die?

Floating around forums & googling around I’ve noticed this question still being asked a lot: “Do I still have to support IE6?” and often the the answer you see is that it represents such and such percent of web users, and that’s too many to ignore.

I know we all want it dead, but Microsoft has underlined support for its Internet Explorer 6 web browser, despite acknowledging its flaws. The software giant said it would support IE6 until 2014 – four years beyond the original deadline.

Critics - some of which have started an online campaign – want the eight-year-old browser mothballed because they claim it slows the online experience. The browser doesn’t support web standards that have become common the last few years, and making sites work in IE 6 adds significant time to the web development process and some have even started the countdown for it end.

Here is also a group who are joining hands to stop IE6 “I Dropped IE6”

Despite the release of IE 7 in 2005 and IE 8 in 2009, a full 20% of users still use IE 6. In other words, it is still too big of a group to ignore.

But the positive side is IE6 is the oldest and the healthiest browser which have covered a big area on web and will not be easily demolished. So, make the decision for yourself. Keep your client’s objectives and interests in mind and if I missed some major considerations or you think I’m nuts, feel free to comment.

Most of all, happy coding

IT services and solutions provider Unisys Corporation has said it will slash as many as 1,300 jobs across the world and plans to forgo any salary hike next year in most of the countries where the company operates.

“The headcount reductions have begun and will continue into 2009… the company also plans to forgo 2009 salary increases in most of the company’s markets,” Unisys Corporation said in a statement.

Unisys said that it is exploring a wide range of cost-reduction options and that actions currently underway are expected to reduce its annual cost structure by more than USD 225 million.

The cost-reduction actions –led by new Unisys Chairman and CEO Ed Coleman — are part of an overall programme to simplify the company’s business structure, concentrate its resources more effectively and drive improved market success and profitability, Unisys added.

The initial cost-reduction actions are focused on reducing selling, general and administrative (SGandA) expenses and controlling or reducing labor costs across the board.

“The company plans to reduce its spending on third-party expenses, facility consolidations, head-count reductions and a suspension of company matching contributions to the US 401(k) plan, which had been costing about USD 50 million annually,” the statement added.

Surfing the net has become a lot more easier since wireless internet has come into being, and now Wi-Fi has rightly topped the poll for the greatest technological advance of the last decade, according to a survey.

With 35.5 percent votes, Wi-Fi has beaten Sky+, Sat Navs, iPods and Blackberries to win the poll conducted by a leading gadget magazine.

In the survey by ‘Stuff’ magazine, the readers were asked to choose the greatest technological innovation of the past ten years.

More than a third voted for Wireless Internet.

SKY+, the personal video recorders (PVR) by Sky, at the second place, has emerged as the best known and best loved PVR.

“It really has given power to the consumer to allow them to watch what they want when they want,” the Telegraph quoted Fevzi Turkalp, who runs the Gadget Detective website, as saying.

Sat Nav, provided in almost every car now, stood at the third place, while energy-efficient Hybrid Cars have marked fourth place in the list.

Apple’s iPod has taken the fifth place in the list.

Simon Osborne-Walker, the publisher of Stuff magazine, said that he was confident readers had managed to sum up the best of the last decade.

“It’s been an amazing ten years for technology. Gadgets have gone from being big black boxes under the television to lightweight, portable devices,” he said.

Stuff’s list of the best technological innovation of last decade:

1. Wireless Internet – 35.5 percent

2. Sky+ – 16.9 percent

3. Sat Nav – 16.6 percent

4. Hybrid Cars – 8.9 percent

5. iPod – 5.6 percent

6. Chip and Pin – 5.6 percent

7. Nintendo Wii – 3.9 percent

8. Skype – 1.7 percent

9. Oyster Card – 1.5 percent

10. Blackberry – 1.1 percent

Other – 2.6 percent

Hackers who steal data or manipulate large number of computers may be jailed for up to seven years, according to a proposed amendment to the Chinese Criminal Law.

The penalties will also be applicable to those who offer software or tools for hacking to any intruder.

The existing law offers punishment only for intruding into networks of governments, national defence or leading science sectors; or altering the functions of personal computer systems.

However, the amended law will be the first legal tool to curb increasing data theft from civil-use computers in China.

According to Zhou Guangquan, a member of the NPC’s law committee and a professor in criminal law at Tsinghua University, the proposed penalties also apply to Chinese hackers, who steal information from foreign computers.

The proposed draft states that either the crime or its consequence occurs in China, it shall be subject to Chinese law, reports the China Daily.

“Even if the crime has nothing to do with China, but the criminal is a Chinese citizen, it also falls under the law’s jurisdiction,” Zhou said.

Li Shishi, deputy director of the NPC law committee, said that the latest changes were made at the request of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

“The ministry said many unscrupulous people have been found hacking computers to steal account numbers and passwords, or to remotely control them,” he said.

“These actions are a big threat to online security, and we consider it necessary to define them as crimes,” he added.
