The Transsexual Question

Eunuchs are a freak of nature. But they continue to be marginalised from mainstream society, forced to earn their living through prostitution and looked down upon through no fault of theirs, due to ignorance and superstition.

Professor Shomenath Bandopadhyay of Naihati is a 36 year old lecturer in Bengali at Jhargram College. He is also the editor of a monthly paper called Abomanob (Avmanav, literally meaning subhuman) that deals with the plight of the eunuch and seeks to abolish the “Hijra Pratha” of sex sale of the eunuchs.

Mr Bandopadhyay lives with his parents at his residence at Naihati. He wears colourful, unconventional More >

Are you ready to quit smoking?

The other day my 20 years old son announced that he had given up smoking. He had picked up this ‘cool’ habit in the first year of college and had smoked cigarettes for almost three years now. I had accepted this ‘fad’ as his right to choose his own life style; but the news of his quitting was like music to my ears. As a parent I felt greatly relieved and happy; however, his statement got me thinking………

Why do people smoke? Why do they continue smoking even though they know that this habit of theirs is slowly but surely eroding More >

Indian National Anthem as the best song

UNESCO Names Indian National Anthem as the best song… I can see why, it is inclusive of the peoples of India..

There is a line which reads “Punjab, sindh, gujarat Maratha, dravida utkala (area of ancient orissa Kalinga) Banga. It talks about the people of the regions mentioned, it is not exclusively those regions, but meant to represent all peoples. You are welcome to click the link and enjoy the Anthem. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7399792002477900458 . It is beautiful, if it is the first time you are hearing you will have goose bumps.

RELIGION = TERROR….?

I see much being written about Islam here. I thought to write a blog of my own on this issue.

The majority of Indians are Hindus. A sizable percentage of the Indian population is also non Hindu, which would include, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Zoroastrians, Jewish.

Hinduism has had disagreements with nearly every faith listed, at some point in India’s history. Struggle between faiths is nothing new. Before the current anti-Islamic and anti- Christian tirade, we have had anti-Sikh sentiment running high not very long ago. Hindu faith has been in conflict with Buddhism and Jainism, religions which Hindus zealots believe are More >

RAMBLINGS OF A DERANGED WRITER

Why should the heart always win over the brain is a question that haunts me for years and I am yet to find an answer even though I claim to have seen a few decades in my life time. Mentioning -how many decades-would eventually reveal my age and my intention now is certainly not to be included in the ageing or aged group. Milton, the great English poet claims that iron bars do not make a cage, and I in the same vein claim that passing years do not make old age.

No Superstitions, No Tension!

Knowledge of consequences of action helps human to choose and lead life with wisdom. False beliefs and superstitions restrict the mind and stop the manifestations of their talents.

How superstitions develop? From believes out of fear, from disbelief in God, from foolishness, from illiteracy, and by blindly following stupid role models. The great tragedy is, in this 21st century of great advance too, people believe in superstitions.

The fast forward march due to Globalization, computer education etc made u ready to shed your clothes to half nude but not yet ready to shed the old or unwanted believes because they are traditional! More >

NO WONDER humor

A Scotsman planning a trip to Holy Land

Was shocked when he learnt it would cost

The equivalent of five pounds an hour

To hire a boat on the Sea of Galilee. The

Travel Agent told him “But, remember

The Sea of Galilee is the water on which

Our Lord walked.” The man shook his head

Sadly and said “It is no wonder, He walked”

INDIA LEADS THE WAY IN SOLAR POWER – FANTASY OR PREDICTION?

INDIA LEADS THE WAY IN SOLAR POWER – FANTASY OR PREDICTION?

 Chennai India 2012

It seems silly that when power from a monster nuclear fusion station a safe distance away is supplying non-polluting power in  prodigal amounts—in the form of sunlight—people should be talking about power starvation.

The idea was Indian, and it was laughably simple, but it ushered in solar power in a massive way. The innovation was battery changing stations for electric powered cars similar to petrol filling stations. The power came from the sun. The trick was to place photovoltaic panels wherever one can place them, on uncultivable land, on More >
