Oh God!
I’ve been wondering why I am here. On this earth, at this time. What is the purpose of my being? Maybe once I find the answer to that, it may lead me on to the next question – Who am I? And by the time, I realize the answers to these questions, it may be time to leave.
I have seen so many who have dreams. And they work every day to fulfill those dreams. A house, a car… a bigger house, a bigger car…a company…a huge company…a trip around the world…a trip to space…a yacht…an aircraft…a palace (harem?)
Somehow dreams have this habit of getting better. And bigger. And the thrill of the chase fills the waking moments of the day. A purpose.
To help us achieve all those dreams, we have our Gods. We have Gods of all religions. We have Gods when it is convenient. Like during exam times. Whenever we are not sure of ourselves, we do need someone to turn to. Isn’t it God’s blessing that the most brilliant student sat diagonally across and you could take a peek into what she is writing?
Isn’t he the same God who later helped you peek into what your rival is quoting in a tender form?
Of course it is a quid pro quo relationship we have with our Gods. You give me and I give you. You help me now and I will repay you later. You heal me and I will live for you. Promises. Offerings. Bargains.
Though the ratios are often tilted in our favor. You give me 100 and I will give you ten.
Somewhere along the way we seem to have developed collective amnesia. That religions were formed by man. It was meant to be a guideline to good living. Somewhere along the way everything was forgotten. Like love, for instance.
All religions profess to have “love” as their founding tenet. But yet, there are so many divisions, even within them. If there is love, won’t there be tolerance? If there is love, how can there be war? If there is love, everything else will pale.
“Love your neighbour as yourself”
Where there is love, peace will reign. I always wonder where love has gone every time I look at the news. It’s sickening to watch what’s happening around in the name of religion. I wonder what would happen if the founders of religions were around. Would they just sit and watch?
Is all this the result of the new religion? Money, mammon, lucre, whatever. The new age God. Worshipped with unflinching fervour?
The God who can do no wrong. The God who can make or break life. The God of happiness. Satiation. The God who can corrupt sages. The God who bestows honor and prestige. The God who can make you feel omniscient?
It’s sad to see families divided, love lost, children go astray…all due to this one God.
The God who supposedly makes the world go around. And this God has proclaimed that the greatest sin today is poverty.
I wonder how the other God’s must be taking this. The Gods of Wisdom and Knowledge must be bowing their heads in shame.
