India’s Olympic gold medal and role of administrators and coaches
Abhinav Bindra has proved that Indians are definitely capable of performing well in Olympics and win gold medals for the country. But we can win many more gold medals provided the selection of sportspersons is done fairly and without favouritism. The main reason for the poor performance is the wrong selection by the inept selectors and administrators of the sports. How can politicians and beurocrats who have no achievement to show in the sports world be trusted to run the sports bodies? Favouritism and prejudice are the part of Indian culture right from the olden times. Remember how Guru Dronacharya favoured Arjun over Eklavya ( belonging to a tribal community “Bheel”) and got his thumb chopped as “Gurudakshina” to help Arjun? And today we honour the same Guru by having sports awards for sports coaches in his name,i.e.” Dronacharya Awards.” No doubt such coaches will indulge in favouritism and prejudices. Will it not be proper to have these awards named after “Eklavya” instead to acknowledge his sacrifice and honour him atleast now.?
