WILL TO HEALTH
The incidence of coronary artery diseases and diabetes is reported to have assumed alarming proportions in India during the past ten years.
According to a WHO report it is estimated that by the year 2010 , sixty per cent of world’s cardiac patients will be Indians and the number of patients would have gone up from 30 millions to 100 millions. Incidence of these diseases in India is mostly in the age group 35 to 45.
The reasons mentioned are:
Preference to fast foods in stead of traditional foods.
Sedentary occupations coupled with lack of physical exercise.
Smoking, drinking and other unhealthy habits.
Stress, (which can be reduced by healthy breathing and yoga meditation).
Excessive intake of salt.
Not cutting down the intake of calories to the need level.
Sitting before TV or computer for long hours can lead to diabetes.
All these are within common knowledge. Even those who are genetically predisposed to these diseases can get relief by adopting healthier life styles.
Medical science has advanced considerably. Many of these diseases can be predicted, prevented and treated . Making use of these facilities in time can be helpful.
Action to prevent and cure these diseases should not be left entirely to medical practitioners, and public health organizations. Homes and schools should train their wards by adoption of healthy life styles themselves and guiding growing children in this respect.
The needed knowledge and facilities are there. What is lacking is the will to health.
